STRIVING TO BE A GREENER EVENT
MBMM organizers are excited to announce the launch of a green initiative, aimed at creating a sustainable event with minimal environmental impact. With many eco-friendly choices already in place, we look forward to recognizing the 2011 race as the greenest yet.
A few of the eco-friendly efforts planned for 2011 include:
- First annual tree planting ceremony to occur in Melbourne
- Increased focus on online registration to reduce paper
- Paper applications printed on recycled paper
- Medals made of recycled materials
- Recycled toilet paper/paper towels/green soap
- Goody bags made of bio-degradable or reusable materials
- Bio-degradable water cups
- Compostable trash bags
- Bio-fueled pace car or lead bicycles
- Charitable shoe collection drive
- Use of bikes for race support staff
- Recycling collection on race course, at finish line and stage area
- Non-toxic chemicals used in portalets
- Organic fruit and foods
- Organic cotton tees to 5K & 8K runners
- Eco-friendly ink used on printing of all shirts
- Generic banners and signs used whenever possible for re-use in future years
- Crowne Plaza Melbourne Oceanfront will provide shuttle service to and from the start/finish area for the Half and Full Marathons on Sunday.
