Melbourne, Fla. - Space Coast Credit Union and the Melbourne & Beaches Music Marathon are today announcing a running-themed VISA debit card featuring a group of runners competing in the 2010 Melbourne Marathon Weekend.

The photo was taken last February by event photographer and Merritt Island resident Don Eggert and depicts runners heading east near the top of the Eau Gallie Causeway.

"We are proud that Space Coast Credit Union has chosen a photo from our event as their first ever running-themed card," said State Farm Melbourne & Beaches Music Marathon Weekend founder Mitch Varnes.  "SCCU has been a great supporter of our event since its inception, and this particular photo, with runners on the Eau Gallie Causeway bridge, captures the challenge and spirit of our race - while also featuring an iconic landmark of our area."

"This card was a logical extension of our locally-themed card designs," said Timothy Antonition, SCCU's Executive Vice President for Retail Operations.  "We were able to expand our sports design selection while spotlighting a unique event that contributes to the local economy."

As part of the card rollout, SCCU is donating $1,000 to the Brevard County Parks and Recreation Disabilities Program.  This program organizes activities for challenged citizens of all ages throughout Brevard.

State Farm Melbourne & Beaches Music Marathon & NextEra Energy Resources Partner In Making The Running Weekend Extravaganza A Carbon-Balanced Event – First Ever In Florida

Melbourne, Fla. – The Melbourne & Beaches Music Marathon Weekend, East Central Florida’s premiere distance running event, today announces a partnership with NextEra Energy Resources, the country’s number one producer of renewable energy, that results in the weekend running festival becoming a “Carbon Balanced Event.”

As such, the two entities have combined resources and coordinated to assert that all of the carbon emissions equal to the amount of energy used at this year’s marathon weekend will be balanced with 100% certified wind power in the form of a certified renewable energy certificate.

“We are proud to work with the State Farm Melbourne & Beaches Music Marathon this year,” said Rick Anderson, NextEra’s Senior Director of Renewable Energy Marketing.  “Their commitment reduces the carbon footprint for the event by avoiding approximately 111,682 pounds of CO2 equivalent and has directly impacted the future growth of new renewable energy facilities across the U.S.”

“We are very happy to have this new partnership with NextEra and especially pleased with what it says about our event and its direction,” acknowledged Melbourne & Beaches Music Marathon Weekend founder Mitch Varnes.  “We went into this year with a dedicated focus and lots of planned initiatives that would result in making our 2011 event one of the greenest and most sustainable running competitions anywhere.  We still have a ways to go to catch up with some others, but this partnership is a big statement and step forward.”

The State Farm Melbourne & Beaches Music Marathon is Melbourne’s Signature Sporting event and a USATF national and Florida state championship race featuring six running events over the course of February 5 & 6, 2011 – Ronald McDonald Kids Run, Florida Today 5k & 8k, the Top End/Paralyzed Veterans Association’s EuroAmerican Hand Cycling Championships and the State Farm ½ marathon and marathon.  Information can be found at www.themelbournemarathon.com

EarthEra, a program created by NextEra Energy Resources, North America’s largest producer of wind and solar power, provides companies and individuals the opportunity to reduce their carbon impact and participate in the development of future renewable projects.  One hundred percent from the purchase of EarthEra product purchases are directed to the EarthEra Renewable Energy Trust and used to build new renewable energy facilities in North America.  To date, the Trust has over $35 million in commitments from leading organizations and forward thinking individuals across the nation.  For additional information, visit www.earthera.com and www.nexteraenergyresources.com

DEFENDING STATE FARM MELBOURNE & BEACHES MUSIC ½ MARATHON AND USATF NATIONAL MASTERS ½ MARATHON CHAMPION PAUL AUFDEMBERGE WITHDRAWS FROM February 6, 2011 TITLE RACE DUE TO INJURY

MELBOURNE, FLA. -- For the first time since its inception in 2009, the State Farm Melbourne & Music Marathon Weekend will have a new ½ marathon winner when it is competed on Sunday, February 6. The event, which features the USATF National Championship Masters ½ Marathon race, has been won both years by Paul Aufdemberge, 45, of Redford, Michigan.

Aufdemberge did not specify his injury when announcing his withdrawal from the race yesterday but did say via e-mail that he has been unable to run the past few weeks and will not be in competitive form anytime in the next several weeks. Aufdemberge has been a dominant force on the national USATF Masters running circuit the past few years and previously completed Melbourne's ½ marathon course in 1:08:05 in 2009 and 1:08:56 in 2010.

"Paul is a class act and has been a great champion and spokesman for our race," said event founder Mitch Varnes. "We'll miss him this year and be looking forward to his return in 2012."

"Melbourne is a fun and well organized race and a really nice community," Aufdemberge said via e-mail. "I am disappointed to miss the race this year, but I know it will be exciting to have a new champion."

Melbourne's 2011 female champion and reigning USATF National Champion Masters ½ marathon runner Lori Kingsley, 43, of Wysox, Pennsylvania has again entered the event and looks to be a strong contender for a repeat win.

In addition to the USATF National Championship Masters ½ Marathon, the State Farm Melbourne & Beaches Music Marathon Weekend also hosts the USATF Florida championship 8k, ½ and full marathons clearly establishing it as East Central Florida's premiere distance running event.

About 3,000 total runners from more than 40 states and 12 countries are expected for the running weekend that features the free Ronald McDonald Kids Run, the Florida Today 5k & 8k runs presented by Dick's Sporting Goods and the State Farm Melbourne & Beaches ½ and full marathon races.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

STATE FARM MELBOURNE & BEACHES MUSIC MARATHON WEEKEND ADDS RELAY DIVISION;

TWO-PERSON TEAM MEMBERS WILL EACH RUN 6.55 MILES IN 13.1 MILE HALF-MARATHON RACE

Melbourne, Fla. – Following the trend of several other races to make its event more accessible to everyday runners, organizers of the State Farm Melbourne & Beaches Music Marathon Weekend are today announcing the addition of a relay division to its half-marathon run. East Central Florida’s premiere distance running event will be competed February 5 & 6, 2011 and includes a 5k, 8k, half and full marathon and a marathon distance hand cycle race.

Teams made up of two runners will compete in their own division and run side-by-side with others participating in the full and half-marathon. Rather than running the entire distance, each relay team member will run 6.55 miles. Relay runners will be transported to and from the half-way transition area but will start and finish the race the same as full distance runners. The unique rectangular-shaped course twice crosses the Indian River -- once at the five-mile mark and then again at about the 12-mile mark – giving each team member their own bridge crossing – the signature mark of the event.

“A half-marathon is a daunting distance for lots of people,” said event founder Mitch Varnes. “By breaking it up, we open the event to many more runners and also allow for more camaraderie and competition. It is a win-win for everyone.”

The Melbourne & Beaches Music Marathon Weekend is expected to draw more than 3,000 runners and 20,000 spectators to Melbourne and its neighboring towns. Registration forms and additional information on the event can be found at www.themelbournemarathon.com

RUNNING LEGEND BILL RODGERS & BOSTON RED SOX ALL STAR TIM WAKEFIELD AMONG RACE STARTERS FOR STATE FARM MELBOURNE & BEACHES MUSIC MARATHON WEEKEND

Melbourne, Fla. – Four-time Boston Marathon winner Bill Rodgers and Boston Red Sox pitcher Tim Wakefield will be joining Florida Today Publisher Mark Mikolajczyk as the official race starters during the February 6 & 7, 2010 Melbourne & Beaches Music Marathon Weekend.

The running weekend attracts more than 2,000 runners from overseas and throughout the United States and is Melbourne’s Signature Sporting event. Mikolajczyk will gun start the 8k and then line up to run the 5k, which begins 30 minutes later.

Running icon Bill Rodgers of Boston returns to Melbourne for the second straight year and will also be competing in Sunday’s half-marathon “Melbourne is a beautiful area – especially compared to Boston in February – and I had a great time here last year,” said Rodgers. “It is a pleasure for me to be the official starter of the Florida Today 5k run.”

USATF OF FLORIDA AWARDS MELBOURNE MARATHON WEEKEND
3 STATE CHAMPIONSHIP RACE

Melbourne, Fla. – Adding to the allure of the State Farm Melbourne & Beaches Music Marathon weekend set for next February, the USA Track & Field Association’s Florida chapter has announced that its 2010 state championship 8-k, ½ Marathon and Marathon championship races will be held in Melbourne in conjunction with the weekend-long runfest.

The State Farm Melbourne & Beaches Music Marathon debuted this past February and was so well received that organizers and the city opted to expand it from a Sunday run to a Saturday & Sunday event that features the Florida Today 5-k & 8-k on Saturday and the ½ marathon and marathon on Sunday. The inaugural event saw an estimated 25,000 spectators and almost 2,000 runners take to the streets of Melbourne, the beachside and its bridges in what the Melbourne-Palm Bay Chamber of Commerce dubbed, “ Melbourne’s Signature Sporting event.”

In a near unprecedented move for a first time event and thanks largely to Florida’s wintertime climate, the USATF awarded the 2009 race its National Championship Masters ½ Marathon; an act that immediately put Melbourne on national running maps and on the agenda of the nation’s top distance runners age 40 and over. The USATF announced this past spring that Melbourne will remain the host site of the Masters ½ Marathon Championships through 2012.

2009’s list of competing elite Master runners included 4-time Boston and New York City Marathon winner Bill Rodgers, 1984 Boston Marathon winner Greg Meyer, top contenders Sean Wade and Dennis Simonaitis and winner Paul Aufdemberge. Former world record holder, Olympian and running icon Colleen DeReuck was the winning woman. Most of these runners will be back in Melbourne in 2010 along with the recent addition of another former Olympian and running legend; Zola Budd.

“Having the USATF award us these state championship races in addition to the national one is incredible and an acknowledgement of all the city and community support that led to the creation and success of our State Farm Melbourne & Beaches Music Marathon and Florida Today 5-k and 8-k,” said event founder Mitch Varnes.

“USATF-Florida is delighted to have Melbourne host our 8-k, ½ marathon and marathon championships. This event is well organized and boasts a scenic waterfront course in the beautiful surrounds of Melbourne,” noted USATF-Florida Long Distance Running Chairman Joe Monks. “We are indeed excited to be affiliated with this great weekend of racing for family and friends.”

The State Farm Melbourne & Beaches Music Marathon kicks off on Saturday, February 6, 2010 with the free Ronald McDonald’s Kids Run and the Florida Today 5-k and 8-k races. The ½ marathon and marathon will take place on Sunday, February 7. Information and race applications are available online at www.themelbournemarathon.com .
