GOING GREEN

STRIVING TO BE A GREENER EVENT
In 2011, MBMM organizers launched a green initiative aimed at creating a sustainable event with minimal environmental impact. Along with our partners, we continue to implement new eco-friendly choices with the goal of producing the most sustainable event in the region. In 2012, we instituted 100% recycling of waste and/or composting on the course, at the finish line and post race party.
A few of the eco-friendly efforts planned for 2013 include:
- Focus on online registration to reduce paper
- Paper applications printed on recycled paper
- Medals made of recycled materials
- Recycled toilet paper/paper towels/green soap
- Virtual Goody Bag
- Discarded clothing/shoe collection bins for recycling
- Recyclable water cups
- Compostable trash bags
- Use of bikes for race support staff
- Recycling collection on race course, at finish line and stage area
- Non-toxic chemicals used in portalets
- Recycled polyester tech shirt for all participants
- Eco-friendly ink used on printing of all shirts
- Generic banners and signs used whenever possible for re-use in future years
- Recycling available at the expo for exhibitors’ packaging and sampling products
- Cardboard trash cans on the course
- Elimination of 3,000 manilla envelopes from the registration process
- Focus on online distribution of race information to reduce waste
We are proud to announce our official Sustainability Sponsor, Waste Management, and look forward to their efforts in helping to make the Melbourne Marathon more environmentally friendly.
